Tuesday: Villa And City Make Statements
Manchester City made the perfect start under Enzo Maresca as Erling Haaland scored twice in the second half away to Porto, taking his tally to 59 goals in as many Champions League appearances. Real Madrid also began with a win, Kylian Mbappe and Federico Valverde putting Jose Mourinho's side 2-0 up inside 23 minutes before Carlos Augusto's late reply gave Inter a share of the pride without troubling the scoreline further.
Aston Villa were the pick of the travelling sides, coming from behind at Club Brugge as John McGinn's early opener was cancelled out before Emiliano Buendia and Nicolas Jackson turned the game to seal a 3-2 win. There were goals galore elsewhere too: Borussia Dortmund fought back from behind to beat Villarreal 3-2 with Serhou Guirassy scoring twice, Real Betis came from behind to win 3-2 at Lille through a Marc Bartra brace and a Troy Parrott decider, and AEK Athens edged out LASK 1-0 courtesy of a Razvan Marin free-kick.
Wednesday: PSG And Barcelona Run Riot, Arsenal Made To Work
If Tuesday was tight, Wednesday was anything but. Paris Saint-Germain put six past Slovan Bratislava without reply for long spells, Ferran Torres helping himself to a hat-trick alongside a Ousmane Dembele double and a Fabian Ruiz strike, with Suleiman Camara grabbing a consolation for the Slovak champions. Barcelona were nearly as ruthless, Raphinha scoring twice in a 5-1 win over Feyenoord that also featured goals from Karim Adeyemi, Lamine Yamal and Gabriel Jesus, with Sem Steijn on the scoresheet for the Dutch side.
Liverpool needed to come from behind against Atletico Madrid, Marcos Llorente's early strike cancelled out by Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister as the Reds won 2-1 at Anfield. Arsenal had the tightest night of any of the English clubs, needing until the 75th minute in Naples before Martin Odegaard finished off a slick team move with a shot off the inside of the post to win it 1-0 against Napoli. Sporting CP beat Galatasaray 3-1, coming from behind through Geny Catamo, Luis Suarez's penalty and a Rodrigo Zalazar free-kick, while Ermedin Demirovic's first-half hat-trick did the damage as Stuttgart beat Viking 3-1.
Thursday: Como's Fairytale, Big Wins For United And Bayern
The competition closed out its opening round in style. Manchester United marked their return to the Champions League with a comfortable 4-0 win over Sabah, while Bayern Munich were similarly untroubled, thrashing Bodo/Glimt 5-0. The night's standout story, though, belonged to Como, playing in the Champions League for the first time in the club's history: they thrashed RB Leipzig 4-1 in what was described as a "dream" debut on the continent. Fenerbahce and Roma shared the points in a 1-1 draw, and PSV Eindhoven were held 1-1 by Shakhtar Donetsk despite a leveller from Sergino Dest.
