1. Fenerbahce v Roma — Champions League, 17:45
Fenerbahce's Champions League opener at a raucous Sukru Saracoglu comes on the back of a derby defeat to Besiktas, against a Roma side that has won three straight in Serie A and arrives full of confidence.
Fenerbahce — recent results
- Besiktas 2-1 Fenerbahce (L)
- Fenerbahce 2-0 Samsunspor (W)
- Fenerbahce 2-1 Lyon (W, CL Qualifying)
- Fenerbahce 4-2 Konyaspor (W)
- Lyon 1-1 Fenerbahce (D, CL Qualifying)
Roma — recent results
- Roma 2-1 Atalanta (W)
- Roma 4-0 Lecce (W)
- Roma 4-0 Fiorentina (W)
- Roma 2-2 Borussia Dortmund (D, friendly)
- Brighton 3-0 Roma (L, friendly)
Fenerbahce's derby loss to Besiktas is a reminder they can be got at, though they did come through their qualifying tie with Lyon unbeaten. Roma head to Istanbul as the form side of the two, three wins from three in Serie A including back-to-back 4-0 routs, and will fancy taking something from a ground that's traditionally hostile for visitors.
Prediction: Fenerbahce 1-1 Roma. Roma's form points to a positive result, but Fenerbahce's home crowd should be worth a goal on a big European night.
2. PSV Eindhoven v Shakhtar Donetsk — Champions League, 17:45
PSV have won four of their opening five Eredivisie games — including a 3-1 win away at Ajax last weekend — against a Shakhtar side that has picked up 12 points from a possible 15 in Ukraine, capped by a comeback win at Karpaty Lviv.
PSV Eindhoven — recent results
- Ajax 1-3 PSV (W)
- FC Utrecht 1-6 PSV (W)
- PSV 5-1 FC Groningen (W)
- Excelsior 1-2 PSV (W)
- PSV 2-2 Fortuna Sittard (D)
Shakhtar Donetsk — recent results
- Karpaty Lviv 1-2 Shakhtar Donetsk (W)
- Shakhtar Donetsk 0-2 Polissya Zhytomyr (L)
- FC Kharkiv 0-1 Shakhtar Donetsk (W)
- Epitsentr Kamianets-Podilskyi 0-2 Shakhtar Donetsk (W)
- Shakhtar Donetsk 5-1 Kudrivka (W)
PSV go into this missing several first-team options — Alassane Plea, Jerdy Schouten, Sam Ouaissa, Kiliann Sildillia and Dennis Man are all out, with Mauro Junior suspended — but their attack has fired regardless, scoring 17 goals in their last three league outings alone. Shakhtar are equally shorthanded (Kiril Fesyun, Pedrinho, Marlon and Eguinaldo all missing) but have shown real resolve, coming from behind to win at Karpaty last time out.
Prediction: PSV Eindhoven 2-1 Shakhtar Donetsk. PSV's home scoring form should be enough, though Shakhtar's habit of fighting back makes a clean sheet unlikely.
3. Bayern Munich v Bodo/Glimt — Champions League, 20:00
Bayern open their title bid at the Allianz Arena with a timely fitness boost, while Bodo/Glimt arrive unbeaten in six and full of the form that carried them through a tough qualifying route.
Bayern Munich — recent results
- Schalke 0-0 Bayern Munich (D)
- VfL Osnabruck 1-4 Bayern Munich (W, DFB-Pokal)
- Bayern Munich 5-1 Stuttgart (W)
- Borussia Dortmund 1-2 Bayern Munich (W, Supercup)
- Heidenheim 2-4 Bayern Munich (W, friendly)
Bodo/Glimt — recent results
- Fredrikstad 1-2 Bodo/Glimt (W)
- Bodo/Glimt 4-2 Rosenborg (W)
- Bodo/Glimt 3-0 NEC (W, CL Qualifying)
- NEC 1-3 Bodo/Glimt (W, CL Qualifying)
- Bodo/Glimt 3-2 Union Saint-Gilloise (W, CL Qualifying)
Bayern have been handed a boost with Serge Gnabry back in full training after almost five months out with an adductor injury, and Vincent Kompany could hand him a place in the squad. Bodo/Glimt have not lost since early August and eliminated Union Saint-Gilloise in qualifying, but a Bayern side that has scored freely all pre-season will be a different proposition entirely.
